Most North American fishing sites rate the
Wolf River as a four out of five, or five stars,
when it comes to fall fishing—especially for
smallmouth bass.
The effluent of three rivers near New London turns
this section of the Wolf River into a smallmouthgathering
epicenter. The Embarrass and Little Wolf
rivers meet up with the Wolf within a six-mile stretch,
making everything in between a prime target for avid
smallmouth bass anglers.
Cooling water temperatures, falling leaves, and
seasonal baitfish movements pull tributary and upriver
bass back into the main river and lakes for winter.
September and October are remarkable times for
schooling smallmouth bass in this system. Around that
same time, crappie and walleye anglers take advantage
of increasing numbers of active fish as well.

in the next issue, peaks in November.

frenzy on the Wolf River
